From June
7th through the 9th, 2001, a rare thing happened in the world of vintage
Saab motor racing at the Virginia International Raceway's Gold Cup
Historic Races. It was there that North America's four 93F racecar
teams met to socialize and compete on track.
The 2001
Gold Cup drew the participation of 160 vintage and historic racecars
to compete on VIR's 3.27 mile, 17-turn track in the hills of southern
Virginia. The Saab 93F contingent consisted of the yellow #93 of Craig
Disney, the red #92 of Randy Cook, the orange #25 of Charles Christ, and
the green #102 of William C. Harding.
Chuck Christ
summarizes the event this way:
It was
a lot of fun to be out on course with the three other cars! All four
of us were running as hard as the cars would go; we were not holding
back at all!
The cars
driven by Randy Cook and Craig Disney ran a bit quicker than my car,
so they were always out ahead. I could never catch Craig and Randy because
they both possessed around 100cc's more displacement than I did. As
hard as I tried, I could not keep with them on the long straights at
VIR.
Bill Harding
and I had great fun running together but Bill's car was plagued with
some running problems. Numerous attempts at adjustments were to no avail.
So, although Bill's car competed throughout the event, it was unreliable
due to fuel delivery problems.
We all
had a great time at the event. It was inspirational to me. The friendship,
information shared, and general good time all contributed to a wonderful,
once in a lifetime event! In retrospect I feel a bit sad realizing that
out of the four cars that were present: one is now in a museum; one
sits awaiting use again some day; and yet another sits waiting for engine
repairs, leaving only me running right now.
Readers may
enjoy viewing several pictures from
the event.
