David and Susan Roethel raced this car from 1961-1964. At the time, David was the SCCA Washington, DC region Executive Director (hence the #1 on the car!). The car is restored to the condition and markings of David’s 1962 season. The markings are taken from a period photograph that appeared on the cover of the November 1962 "The Straight Pipe," the SCCA DC region’s newsletter. The photo depicts the car having just won at the local Marlboro, MD racetrack. I’ve owned the car for 29 years. I found it behind a barn in New Jersey, in the Delaware water gap area, with a 3" tree growing through the right floor. At that time, back in the 1970's, I was searching for a competitive autocross car. It’s now a certified AACA competition vehicle; its competition history has been researched and verified. It’s certified for show field competition in their Class 24B (for road race, hillclimb and autocross cars), and is driven periodically during exhibition runs at select hillclimbs. Charles Christ |
